What is Tuberculosis?
Tuberculosis (TB) is a highly contagious infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs and is spread from one person to another through the air. When infected people sneeze, cough or spit, the TB bacteria are set free into the air and might be inhaled by other people.
According to estimations of the WHO about one third of the world population suffers from latent TB, meaning that they are not yet sick with the disease and cannot transmit it to others. Still, TB is one of todays most serious health threats.
Persons that are infected with TB have a lifelong risk of falling ill; especially people that suffer from other diseases are at high risk. Tuberculosis is also the main cause of death in HIV patients.
Currently, there are nearly 9 million new TB infections and 1.45 million death cases reported each year, mostly in developing countries. According to WHO figures 37 million lives have been saved since 2000 due to correct diagnosis and treatment of TB; Tuberculosis is curable when treatment is provided and taken properly.
