What is Helicobacter pylori?

The bacteria Helicobacter pylori is often found in the stomach- until today it is not entirely clear how people get infected, but it is being suspected that the infection happens through food and water.

Due to it’s spiral-shape the bacteria can penetrate the stomach’s protective mucous lining, where they then produce substances that weaken the lining and make the stomach more vulnerable to damages caused by gastric acids. H. pylori can also attach to stomach cells, causing inflammation (gastritis), and can stimulate the production of excess stomach acid.

Many people that suffer from an infection with H. pylori are at an increased risk for developing peptic ulcers and gastritis. In some cases, the infection with the bacteria can also increase the risk of stomach cancer.

Typical symptoms for an infection with the bacteria are stomach and abdominal pains, nausea, loss of appetite and/or bloating. An exposion to H. pylori can be diagnosed with a blood test, stool test, urea breath test or an endoscopy.
